Topic: Next-generation wireless design
Wireless devices are rapidly evolving to meet new bandwidth and portability demands. With more than 4.7 million base stations expected in operation by 2011, cellular phones are morphing into personal communication devices that are incorporating a variety of features and networks: Wi-Fi radios that access public hotspots and metro area networks to enable voice-over-wireless IP (VoWIP), receivers that bring FM radio and video using ISDBT, DVB-H or MediaFLO, WiMax radios, GPS for location-based applications, and short-distance connectivity such as Bluetooth and Zigbee. Femtocells, picocells, and microcells are expected bring the full benefit of 3G services indoors; 31 million units are expected to ship by 2012.
Companies shaping today's wide range of connectivity technologies and applications are invited to provide Taiwan's engineers with the latest developments related to mobile communications devices, from cellular phones to ultra-mobile PCs (UMPCs). Speakers will discuss both trends and challenges, and review path breaking initiatives that will spawn tomorrow's portable wireless devices.
The discussion will focus on:
- Technology trends and current technical and market issues
- Technology roadmaps*, such as that for connectivity technologies, standards, audio/video compression, signal processing, etc.
- Upcoming disruptive technologies
- The future of convergence and new markets
* This is not a product roadmap.
